Yes, many auto parts stores offer free code reading, but that's very different from a professional diagnosis. A free code reader only tells you which code is stored - it doesn't tell you why the code set or what the real problem is. For example, a code might say "oxygen sensor circuit malfunction," but the actual problem could be a broken wire, a vacuum leak, or an exhaust leak - not a bad sensor. We use professional tools, live data, component testing, and experience to find the real cause, so you don't waste money replacing parts that aren't broken.

Most diagnostic tests take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Simple issues (like a loose gas cap triggering an EVAP code) can be diagnosed quickly. Complex or intermittent problems may take longer - especially if we need to test drive the vehicle, test multiple components, or research technical service bulletins. We'll give you a time estimate when you drop off your vehicle.

Yes. After we complete the repair, we clear the trouble codes from the vehicle's computer. In most cases, the light turns off immediately. The vehicle then needs to complete a "drive cycle" (a series of operating conditions) to verify the repair was successful and set readiness monitors. If the problem is truly fixed, the light will stay off. If it comes back on, the issue wasn't fully resolved and we'll diagnose further at no additional diagnostic charge.

It depends on the problem. A steady check engine light usually indicates a non-critical issue (like an emissions problem or sensor fault) that you can drive with temporarily, but you should get it diagnosed soon. A flashing check engine light is serious - it means the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and have the vehicle towed or diagnosed immediately. Readiness monitors (also called I/M readiness or emission monitors) are self-tests your vehicle runs to verify that emission-related systems are working properly. After clearing codes or disconnecting the battery, these monitors reset to "not ready." Your vehicle needs to complete a drive cycle (a mix of idle, city, and highway driving) to set the monitors back to "ready." If you need an emissions test, most states require the monitors to be "ready" or the vehicle will fail. We can check monitor status and guide you through the drive cycle if needed.
