Brake repair costs vary based on what needs to be replaced. A standard brake pad replacement typically runs $150-$300 per axle. If rotors also need replacement, expect $250-$500 per axle. Factors that affect cost include your vehicle make and model, the type of brake pads (ceramic, semi-metallic, organic), rotor condition, and whether additional components like calipers need service.

Brake pad lifespan varies widely - typically 25,000 to 70,000 miles - depending on your driving habits, pad material, and driving conditions. City driving with frequent stops wears pads faster than highway driving. Aggressive braking shortens pad life. Ceramic pads tend to last longer than semi-metallic or organic pads. We measure pad thickness at every inspection and let you know when they're approaching the point where replacement is needed.

Squealing brakes are a warning sign, not an emergency - but they shouldn't be ignored. The squeal usually comes from a wear indicator telling you the pads are getting thin. You can typically drive to our shop safely, but the longer you wait, the more likely you are to damage the rotors, which increases the repair cost. If you hear grinding (metal-on-metal), that's more serious - the pads are gone and you're damaging the rotors with every stop. Get it checked right away.

Not always. Brakes are serviced by axle (front or rear), not all four wheels at once. Your front brakes typically wear faster than the rears because they handle 60-70% of your vehicle's braking force. We inspect all four wheels and measure pad thickness at each corner, then recommend replacement only where it's needed. In many cases, you'll replace the front pads first, then the rears later. Replacing both sides of the same axle at the same time ensures even braking.

Brake pads are the friction material that press against the rotor to create the stopping force. They wear down over time and need periodic replacement. Rotors (also called brake discs) are the round metal discs that the pads clamp onto. Rotors last longer than pads but can warp, develop grooves, or wear too thin and also need replacement. When pads are replaced, we always inspect and measure the rotors to determine if they can be resurfaced (machined smooth) or need replacement.

A soft or spongy brake pedal usually indicates air in the brake lines, a brake fluid leak, or worn internal seals in the master cylinder or calipers. Air is compressible, so when it gets into the hydraulic system, the pedal feels soft and travels farther before the brakes engage. This is a safety concern and should be diagnosed immediately. We'll pressure-test the system, check for leaks, bleed the brake lines to remove air, and inspect the master cylinder and calipers.

It depends on the rotor thickness and condition. Rotors have a minimum thickness specification stamped on them. If they're above that minimum and have no cracks, severe grooves, or warping, we can resurface them (machine them smooth) to restore a flat braking surface. If they're too thin, badly warped, or damaged, replacement is safer and more cost-effective. We measure every rotor with a micrometer and let you know which option is best for your vehicle.

A standard brake pad replacement on one axle typically takes 1 to 2 hours. If rotors also need replacement or resurfacing, add another 30 minutes to an hour. More complex jobs like caliper replacement, brake line repair, or ABS diagnostics can take longer. We'll give you an accurate time estimate when we inspect your vehicle. Many brake jobs can be completed the same day, and we offer shuttle service or a comfortable waiting area if you prefer to wait.

Vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal or steering wheel during braking is usually caused by warped rotors. Rotors can warp from repeated heat cycles (hard braking, then cooling), uneven torque on the lug nuts, or driving through water when the brakes are hot. The warped surface creates a high spot that pulses against the brake pads. Depending on the severity and rotor thickness, we can either resurface the rotors to restore a smooth, flat surface, or replace them if they're too thin or badly warped.
